Before finishing his career in September 1948 orthodox boxer Zale built up a record of 67 wins, 2 draws, and 18 losses, starting at age 20 on June 1934 and ending 14 years later at . In his first fight in June 1934, Zale defeated Eddie Allen in a 4 round fight. The fight went the full distance and secured Zale his first win and distance win to kick of his pro career. Following on from his debut, Zale continued his mostly successful career by fighting in a further 44 fights. In this time he fought Wilbur Stokes, Jack Charvez and Henry Schaft to name just a few, fighting 21 times in 1934, 5 times in 1935 and 18 times through 1936, 1937 and 1938 in this period.
Zale kept his losses at 12 by beating Bobby Lamonte on May 16th, 1938. Lamonte was a worthy challenger but Zale was too much and became the first person to stop Lamonte via TKO during round 5. Zale's win streak of 27 rose to 42 following 15 wins against boxers such as Milton Shivers, Ben Brown, Al Hostak and 12 others.
Pushing his career further, Zale fought Al Hostak on July 19th, 1940 adding to his winning record. Zale was the first person to stop Al Hostak and he did it in the 13th round via TKO. Zale continued his success in the next 2 fights taking his record to 44-15-2
Zale kept his losses at 15 by beating Tony Martin on January 1st, 1941. Zale was the first person to stop Tony Martin and he did it in the 7th round via TKO. Zale's win streak of 45 rose to 57 following 12 wins against boxers such as Georgie Abrams, Steve Mamakos, Al Hostak and 9 others.
Zale went into his next career fight with a record of 57-16-2 and took this to 58 wins with a win against Rocky Graziano on September 27th, 1946. Zale's fight against Rocky Graziano came in the 6th round of a 15 round fight via KO. Zale became the first person to stop Graziano. Zale's win streak of 58 rose to 66 following 8 wins against boxers such as Deacon Logan, Len Wadsworth, Lou Woods and 5 others.
On June 10th, 1948, Zale was in action again with a win via KO against Rocky Graziano taking his mostly successful record to 67-17-2. Zale was the 2nd person to stop Rocky and he did it in the 3rd round via KO. The fight was due to last 15 rounds.
The next defeat of Zale's career came against Marcel Cerdan on September 21st, 1948. This took his career record to 67-18-2. Cerdan turned out to be too much for Zale stopping him in the 11th. Showing that the time was right for Zale to call it a day and retire.
