Alejandro Lara was next in line for Charles where unfortunately, he was defeated on July 5th, 2013 taking his record to 8-1-1. Charles's technical boxing ability was put to the test as he got outpointed in the 10 round fight against the better man. Lara gave Charles his first professional loss of his 10 fight career to date. Charles then went on to win again against Abel Perez setting him up well for his next pro fight.

On July 18th, 2014, Charles was in action again with a win via TKO against Angel Pena taking his mostly successful record to 10-1-1. Charles was the 3rd person to stop Angel and he did it in the 1st round via TKO. The fight was due to last 10 rounds.

Jose Charles went into his fight with Jesus angel Nerio on October 15th, 2014 with 10 wins and he added another win to his record taking it to 11 wins by beating Nerio. Charles was the 3rd fighter to stop Nerio in round 4 of a 10 round fight, Charles won via TKO.
