Watanabe went into his next career fight with a record of 5-1-1 and took this to 6 wins with a win against Tomoya Murata on July 4th, 2012. Murata was a worthy challenger but Watanabe was too much and became the first person to stop Murata via TKO during round 3.
Taking another knock in his career, Watanabe fought Akinori Hoshino on December 12th, 2012 and was defeated by Hoshino. This bout proved to be the toughest of Watanabe's 9 career fights to date. Hoshino was too skilful and took 5 rounds to dispose of Watanabe. This was Watanabe's first stoppage defeat as he looks to move on and rebuild going forwards.
