Kovalev continued his mostly successful career with numerous fights following his debut against boxers including Roman Simakov, Douglas Otieno okola and Dallas Vargas. Fights included fighting 5 times in 2009 and 6 times in 2011.
Cedric Agnew was the next fight for Kovalev on March 29th, 2014 and also his next career win. Becoming the first person to stop Cedric Agnew, Kovalev beat Agnew via KO in the 7th round of a 12 round fight. Kovalev lost to Andre Ward in his next fight. Taking place on June 17th, 2017, Kovalev's career record after this fight stood at 30-2-1. Kovalev's fight against Andre Ward was Kovalev's first stoppage defeat. This came via TKO in the 7th round of a 11 round fight. Kovalev then went on to win again against Vyacheslav Shabranskyy setting him up well for his next pro fight.
Kovalev kept his losses at 2 by beating Igor Mikhalkin on March 3rd, 2018. Kovalev was the first person to stop Igor Mikhalkin and he did it in the 7th round via TKO.
The next defeat of Kovalev's career came against Eleider Alvarez on August 4th, 2018. This took his career record to 32-3-1. Once again Kovalev was in a tough fight, one that proved to be a step too far in Kovalev's latest fight. Opponent Alvarez fought well and was rewarded with a win, and crowned only the 2nd man to stop Kovalev in the process. The fight ended in round 7 via KO.
